Altai is a real place of power. You would hardly find a proper word to describe this feeling of boundless freedom, self-comprehension and aboriginal unity with nature, which you can experience there.
Famous Russian artist and traveler Nikolai Rerikh was convinced that the entrance to Shambala was hidden in the Altai Mountains. He even mounted an expedition to find it and today many tourists retrace his steps.

The Altai foothills areas are uniting sublime natural beauty and ethnographical exotics. Local way of life has very little changed from long ago. Some remote villages might be reached by car only during summer period and it seems that modern civilization has not at all affected their daily routine. They still bake bread in the ovens, carry water with a wooden yoke, do farming and breed horses, believe in spirits.
water
The most popular touristic attraction of the region are lake Teletskoye (with its best fishing sites) and Karakolsky lakes — the unique and fascinating natural reserve.
The water in each of its seven lakes differs in chemical composition and consequently in color. This is one of the most picturesque places of Altai, often chosen for hiking and horse ridding.

The exceptional landscapes and mysterious legends are not the only attractions for tourists: the region is widely known for its marals enclosures. The antlers of marals are used for medical purposes.
